/Rant-ish

I may need a drink tonight. The first item I designed, by myself, out of engineering school is being built. 20,000 lbs of steel - people working behind it in a pressure environment - being fabbed up for a project costing north of half a mil. I know this isn’t very big in the world of construction and they are still months away from actually putting it into use in the field, but I am freaking out a little bit. I don’t want to be that guy that screws up his first design. All the calcs have been checked by multiple people with P.E.s, but I know some stupid people with PEs. Plus I’ve caught errors doing a review on an item/calc that has been checked by multiple people.

So, yeah, freaking out a bit.

Here is a portion. This isn’t the part I’m worried about. The part that I am stressing about hasn’t been fabbed up or they haven’t sent me pics, one of the two.

Here is a Cobra for your time.

Been there, done that. Though mine here recently was only like 3500lb, 15ft-ish off the ground.

It feels really good when the first thing you’ve designed has been made and works as it should. Just wait, it will be worth it.

In the meantime, enjoy the beer and don’t stress too much.

This one is under about 20 feet of water.

It is mainly how it will be stored that worries me. If it hangs correctly, I will be a happy man.

I’m not an engineer, but I sorta know where you’re coming from. When I was in HS I worked for my dad’s company. One of the products the company made was a synchronizer light for rotating machinery. 6-9 months after they released a new version (mechanical design was outsourced), I noticed that the new one wasn’t as bright as one might want it to be.

I took a test article apart and started playing with it. I discovered that the placement of the flash lamp inside the reflector was not optimized for focus/brightness. I showed my results and dad said “well, if you think you can fix it, go for it” so I spent the next week designing and drawing replacements for 2 internal parts for the light. One part was a spacer for the front of the light, and the other was a revised bracket for the rear. The desired effect was to move the “guts” of the light (including the flash lamp) about a centimeter to the rear of the enclosure, bringing the lamp into a better position in the reflector.

After I produced the drawings they got sent off for contract manufacturing. A few weeks later I got the first batch of new parts and took a set down to assembly and had the first light built with my parts. I was super nervous that 1) it wasn’t going to fit back together inside the enclosure and 2) it wouldn’t actually make the difference in brightness that I’d predicted in my earlier testing.

I was SUPER relieved when everything DID fit back together and the light worked better than originally designed.

So, I hope your parts work!

Congratulations on your first design! I'm sure you'll be good and it will work exactly like you want. It will all be worth it in the end.
